You ever seen a sky so dark
on a night so long
that there’s no difference between
which way is up
and burying your head
beneath the earth
trying to find some air
that hasn’t been turned to breath yet
Maybe I was just asleep
and unaware that I was there,
waiting for these magnesium dreams
to take me deep
and far beyond
what I would choose to seek,
as an astronaut
turned cave diver
feeling my way forward
and stubbing my broken toes
looking for a sign
that I will make it home
It was in that pit
at the center
of all I call myself,
when came a star,
as the littlest seed,
that blinked a supernova
and made a light
finally bright enough to see
the road down
is exactly what I need
to discover the beauty of
universe staring back at me
